It has been another exciting week for our LOTE – Greek classes with students learning some different Greek wording and language.

English Words with Greek Origin

´Dinosaur´, στα Ελληνικά ‘δεινόσαυÏος᾽, comes from the Greek word ᾽δεινός᾽, which means ‘terrible’ and ‘σαÏÏα᾽, which means ‘lizard’.

Meaning of the word ‘Dinosaur’: a lizard like creature which used to rule the Earth millions of years ago.

 

‘Athlete’, στα Ελληνικά ᾽αθλητής᾽, comes from the Greek word ‘άθλος᾽ which means ‘achievement’.

Meaning of the word ‘Athlete’: a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.

 

‘Biography’,στα Ελληνικά ᾽βιογÏαφία᾽, comes from the Greek words ‘βίος᾽ which means ‘life’ and ᾽γÏαφή᾽ which means ‘writing’.

Meaning of the word ‘Biography’: a detailed description of a person’s life.

 

‘Geography’, στα Ελληνικά ᾽ΓεωγÏαφία᾽, comes from the Greek words, ‘γη’, which means ‘Earth’ and ‘γÏαφή᾽, which means á¾½writing’.

Meaning of the word ‘Geography’: the study of the physical features of the Earth and its atmosphere.
